Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide lay Catholic organisation whose members give service to the church. The object of the Legion is to give glory to God through a life of holiness cultivated by prayer and active apostolic work.

Here in Rayleigh we have:

• Senior Praesidium - Our Lady of Ransom. This is open to all ordinary practising Catholics who are willing to fulfil the duties.

• Junior Praesidium - Our Lady Health of the Sick. This is for young people under the age of 18.

• Auxiliary Members - These are people who support the Legion with their prayers.

Duties of active Legionaries are:

• Regular attendance at the weekly meeting. These meetings have a mixture of prayer, spiritual readings, allocation and reports of work.

• Daily recitation of the Catena. This is a prayer based on the Magnificat, which we recite together at all our meetings.

• Performance of active Legion work. This is 2 hours a week for senior members and 1 hour for juniors. The work, includes helping with the Parish repository, visiting elderly, housebound, lapsed and welcoming new parishioners to the Parish.

• Confidentiality. There must be absolute respect for the confidential nature of many of the matters discussed at the meeting.

Meetings take place in the Presbytery for juniors on Fridays at 6:30pm and for the senior members on Fridays at 8 pm.

Auxiliary members.
All that is required for Auxiliary membership is goodwill and the sincere intention of saying daily the prayers in the Tessera, which is given to each auxiliary as a token of membership. These prayers include the rosary and the Catena, which are offered daily for the intention of Our Blessed Lady. The names of auxiliary members are placed on a special roll.
